Silicon carbide is a very hard synthetic abrasive with a sharp, friable grain: it is the C in our grit sizes from C16 to C400. On marble and granite it cuts without loading and leaves an even surface, which is why it is the grain of all our cup wheels, edge wheels, semi-flexible discs and profile wheels.
Carborundum is the historical name of silicon carbide, the grain we use for marble, granite and porcelain. Aluminium oxide (corundum) is tougher: we use it in the dressing and truing wheels for diamond tools, in grits from A16 to A220. Two abrasives, two different jobs.
A non-standard size, a profile made to drawing, a recurring supply: call us, or send us a drawing or a sample and we come back to you with the wheel and the quote.
